My entire experience with Dr. Sean Smith and his team was fantastic, from his booking coordinator Sarah to the nurses, office staff, operating room staff, anesthesiologist, and Dr. Smith himself. I had a very extensive procedure done (around 3h in surgery) but I was not nervous at all because at every step of the way I received lots of open honest communication and my questions were taken seriously. I was even a bit overwhelmed with some of the initial paperwork and Sarah took the time to walk me through them and continued answering my questions over the phone or email until I properly understood.
Dr. Smith was great during my consultation, accessible through his patient care coordinator prior to my procedure, and met with me immediately prior to the surgery as well. He was also there when I woke up hours after the procedure in the recovery room (I’ve read about some doctors / surgeons just leaving, so I thought that was worth noting), and debriefed me on everything. I also had a bad reaction (shivering, vomiting) right before bedtime when I was at home, and when I called the provided emergency after-hours number, I was actually able to speak with Dr. Smith directly that night as well and he talked me through it - thankfully it was just my body adjusting after the anesthesia. He also met with me soon after the procedure to check on how my healing and progress were going, and I have an additional 2 post-op appointments as well.
He was very patient, kind, transparent, and attentive throughout all our meetings, and I always felt I was being taken seriously and that he was open to feedback and questions. Besides being under his direct care, I also had 2 follow-ups following the procedure with Nurse Krystal, who was very kind and patient, and the bedside nurses I had during recovery at the surgical centre were amazing, always letting me know what they were doing and what to expect next and making sure I was comfortable.
The clinic where Dr. Smith’s office is does many types of cosmetic treatments and surgeries, including treatments for the skin and scarring, but at no time was I pressured into getting additional treatments that I didn’t ask about, and I was also not ever sales-pressured into buying different products or creams etc (which I have seen complaints of elsewhere). The entire experience was guided by what I communicated, and no one ever pressed me into spending any extra money, which would have made me very nervous since I was spending savings that I saved up for many years on the procedure.
When I asked about different post-surgery care healing options, I found the staff provided me with accessible options. They mentioned optional treatments or products when I asked but said they were not necessary, that they might expedite healing but over time I would heal anyway, and showed me many things I could do at home myself. The post-surgery compression garment and wraps they provided me were also extremely high quality (Marena brand). I had preemptively ordered some compression wear from Amazon after reading about people’s experiences with poor compression garments but ended up returning them because the one provided (at no additional cost) was of much superior quality (soft, easy to wash, sturdy, very effective double-closures with hooks and zippers, and intelligent design of where the seams and clasps were placed relative to the procedures I had done - I found the Amazon ones were uncomfortable and actually caused denting and restricted blood flow at the lipo sites, which can cause permanent damage over repeated use).
My main reason for seeking plastic surgery was not to try and completely change my appearance, it was to fix a few stubborn areas that were a constant reminder of a traumatic time in my life when parts of my body were shaped by extreme chronic stress and hormonal medications. Touching the areas was often incredibly emotional and painful for me, and the contour of my body below my waist would often dig into my clothing and put pressure on my organs, especially at different times in my menstrual cycle. I was feeling many different kinds of body dysmorphia, for many years. I tried many remedies over 15 years, and at one point was even severely underweight, but the protruding area causing me issues remained.
Dr. Smith was incredibly kind, very upbeat, and very honest and realistic with what I could achieve. I ended up doing liposuction with fat transfer to breasts, and I was a perfect candidate because I was already sitting around my ideal weight, with great skin elasticity, and just wanted a subtle change in my body contour. It is also worth noting that I chose Dr. Smith because of positive reviews from the queer community, as I find queer erasure and dismissal in health care to be dehumanizing. My experience with him was both affirming and reassuring.

Dr. Smith is an incredibly talented surgeon and is truly an artist at what he does. I had liposuction performed on my flanks and stomach and I could not be more happy with my results. He was meticulous during the surgery and in post op care. He is kind and caring and answers all of the questions or concerns you may have. I cannot recommend him enough. I have to add that the staff at the Ottawa Clinic are superb, especially Sarah. They are all so positive and supportive and caring.
